In the European Union, transport was responsible for around a quarter of total CO2 emissions in 2019, of which 71.7% came from road transport (including 60.6% from cars), 14% from shipping, 13.4% from civil aviation and 0.4% from rail transport.
As part of efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and achieve climate neutrality by 2050, in line with the European Green Pact roadmap, a 90% reduction in GHG emissions from transport is needed by 2050, compared with 1990 levels.
Rail transport is therefore today the main lever enabling Europe to achieve its reduction targets by attracting users of private cars as much as those of aviation.
Signalling solutions from Compagnie des Signaux :
Enable European high-speed train operators such as SNCF, DB, Eurostar, Trenitalia and RENFE to ensure that their trains can cross borders without stopping, even though national signalling systems remain largely incompatible.
So you can travel from Paris to London, Barcelona to Toulouse or Lyon to Milan without changing trains, and in record time – far more attractive than by car, but also than by plane if you take into account the time needed to get to the airport and through security checks.
Increase the number of trains running on the same line, allowing even more passengers and operators to use the existing infrastructure.
For example, Compagnie des Signaux assisted SNCF in modernising the Paris-Lyon line with a new advanced signalling system that has increased the capacity of Europe’s busiest high-speed line by 25%.
Make it possible to increase the density of suburban rail networks, so that suburban lines with low capacity can be converted into genuine express lines, not only the Paris but also in numerous express services around Europe will enable European citizens in major metropolitan area to benefit from genuine metropolitan public transport with capacity over the next 10 years.
