Franco-Portuguese Cooperation for High-Speed Railway Innovation

An exchange of expertise serving European mobility

As part of strengthening ties between Portugal and France, a technical delegation from Infraestruturas de Portugal was recently welcomed in France for an immersive visit to the fully modernised LGV+ Paris-Lyon high-speed line. This initiative is part of the ongoing cooperation formalised during President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Portugal, and made concrete by the signing of a letter of intent between the main stakeholders in the railway sector of both countries.

A partnership based on excellence and sharing

The letter of intent, signed by Compagnie des Signaux – CSEE, SYSTRA and Infraestruturas de Portugal, aims to structure a programme of meetings and exchanges around signalling, safety, and communication systems for high-speed lines. With more than fifty years of experience, the French partners bring their recognised expertise, while Portugal mobilises its major industrial players to enrich this collaboration.

A large IP delegation visited France

The visit programme included:

  • A tour of the LGV Paris-Lyon operations centre in Lyon,
  • Meetings with maintenance and operations teams,
  • Exchanges with the design teams of SYSTRA and CSEE,
  • Demonstrations of IT tools for modelling and simulating signalling systems,
  • Discussions with French experts involved in signalling projects in France and internationally.

A key moment for learning and collaboration

The visit enabled the Portuguese teams to discover advanced signalling, telecommunications, and traffic management systems, while engaging with SNCF teams and French operational managers. It was a privileged moment of dialogue, highlighting the technical and human challenges inherent in managing large-scale infrastructure.

In conclusion, this Franco-Portuguese cooperation illustrates the shared commitment to innovate and strengthen rail mobility in Europe, relying on the exchange of expertise and the construction of sustainable solutions for future generations.
