Standardisation
Contribute to standards
In the 1990s, faced with the patchwork of railway signalling systems in Europe, the railway community rallied to meet a major challenge: to create a unified, interoperable signalling system across the continent. This ambitious project had several strategic objectives :
Standardisation
Designing an advanced signalling system to enable interoperability between different rail networks.
Industrial competition
Offer operators and infrastructure managers the possibility of using several suppliers to limit technological dependency.
Sustainability
Guaranteeing the development and maintenance of this railway signaling system over long cycles, in excess of 20 years, drawing on the expertise of the European Union Railway Agency (ERA).
This vast project culminated in the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), which has gradually been rolled out across Europe and beyond, becoming a global standard.
Among the key players in this transformation, La Compagnie des Signaux is playing a major role in both ground infrastructure and on-board systems.
But the story doesn’t end there. This work on standardisation and modernisation is continuing today as part of the European Shift2Rail programme (in close collaboration with the ERA), which aims to revolutionise the entire rail system. The aim? To make rail the backbone of multimodal transport and mobility in Europe.
By placing itself at the heart of this vision, the European Union is banking on the train to meet the economic, environmental and technological challenges of the future.
