At the VRT Conference, Compagnie des Signaux Promotes an Open Vision for Automated Metro Systems

DIVA Open CBTC: Advancing Openness and Interoperability in Urban Rail

On 17 September 2026, Compagnie des Signaux took part in the conference “Automated Metros: Expanding into Emerging Markets”, organized by Ville, Rail & Transports in Paris. The event brought together leading industry stakeholders to discuss the future of automated metro development and the urban mobility solutions that will shape tomorrow’s cities.

During the conference, Frédéric Bernaudin, Director of Bids & Innovation, joined representatives from RATP Dev, Siemens Mobility, and Egis to share Compagnie des Signaux’ perspective on the future of metro signalling systems.

DIVA Open CBTC for More Flexible and Sustainable Networks

A key theme of the discussions was the growing need for greater openness and interoperability in urban signalling systems. Compagnie des Signaux highlighted DIVA Open CBTC, an approach designed to give operators greater flexibility in evolving their networks while reducing reliance on a single supplier.

This vision addresses several major challenges facing metro operators:

  • Reducing vendor lock-in;
  • Simplifying the integration of new technologies;
  • Supporting the phased modernisation of existing infrastructure;
  • Improving the management of equipment obsolescence;
  • Protecting long-term investments and ensuring future scalability.

By embracing openness and interoperability, DIVA Open CBTC paves the way for more agile metro networks that can evolve in line with the changing needs of cities and operators.

Towards Greater Convergence Between CBTC and ERTMS

The discussions also highlighted the opportunities created by the growing convergence between mainline rail and urban signalling technologies. The evolution of standards such as ERTMS, FRMCS, and ATO is enabling more harmonised architectures and fostering the transfer of innovation between the rail and metro sectors.

For Compagnie des Signaux, this convergence represents a pivotal moment to support the development of transport networks that are increasingly efficient, safe, and sustainable.

Addressing the Challenges of Urban Mobility Worldwide

As urbanisation accelerates and emerging markets continue to grow, transport operators are seeking solutions that are reliable, scalable, and tailored to local needs. Automated metro systems, combined with open and interoperable signalling solutions, are emerging as a key enabler of this transformation.

Through its participation in this conference, Compagnie des Signaux reaffirmed its commitment to advancing urban mobility through solutions that are more open, flexible, and adaptable to future developments.

Building on its expertise in railway signalling systems, the company continues to work alongside operators and transport authorities to help design and deliver the metro networks of tomorrow.

Compagnie des Signaux would like to thank Ville, Rail & Transports for organising this event, as well as all speakers and participants for the quality of the discussions and the valuable exchange of insights on the future of automated metro systems.
